ICPD 2019
The International Conference of Planning and Design (ICPD) is a biennial international conference about the dissemination and exchange of up-to-date research in industrial design, architecture, urban planning, and creative industry, which is held by the College of Planning and Design at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. This conference is a view to gain insight into innovative directions and trends in academic research and practical experience to globally share and spread current research results.
The ICPD has been biannually held since 2001 when the College of Planning and Design at NCKU was newly established. The goal of this conference is to obtain global insights from current planning and design research, and call for all agendas from all the participants, in academia and/or in practices, to share with us their innovative ideas of what a tomorrow’s design evolution should be and their propositions to achieve it.
This year, we are pleased to announce the 10th International Conference on Planning and Design (ICPD) to be held in Tainan, Taiwan from May 29th – 31th, 2019 at National Cheng Kung University.
Theme
The theme of the 10th ICPD 2019 is “Renaissance and Innovation: The Future of Design Education”.
The theme of the conference draws our attention to the next transforming step of design education in today’s dynamic world. Design as a discipline has been evolving, and is expanding its impact from individual physical objects and spaces to service experiences and organizations. However, in today’s interconnected world, knowledge boundaries are blurring, and ambiguity is increasing, leading to a range of complex interdependent environmental, social, and industry challenges. Today’s design practice has diversified, along with the knowledge proliferation that makes curriculum and research development increasingly complex and difficult. The current developed system of design education is at the crossroads and faces an uncertain future.
As a result, it is necessary to further discuss the need to restructure the education model in this conference, to prepare educators and students to respond quickly to opportunities for expanding the influence of design in places we can’t yet imagine, and thereby, transform design education and its implications for preparing for an ambiguous, volatile future.
With this perspective in mind, the 2019 ICPD aims to explore emerging questions such as: “’How can or should design education prepare future designers for this expanding sphere of design influence?”; “What is the promise that design has to offer, and how can design schools lay the foundations to deliver this promise?”; “How will the increasing influence of design impact the future of design education and create value for its stakeholders as well as for the discipline of design?” It seems to be the right time to take a comprehensive look at the current state of design education and start a conversation about its future.
