Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning (B.Sc.)
Graduation Requirements
- All Undergraduate students are required to meet the NCKU English Proficiency Graduation Requirement.
- All Undergraduate students are required to fulfill a short-term internship during summer or winter break for at least 30 days before taking the required course ”PRACTICAL TRAINING” in the senior year.

MASTER PROGRAM
Master of Science in Urban Planning (M.Sc.)
Graduation Requirements
2~4 years required for graduation
Minimum 34 credits required for graduation, not including master degree thesis 6 credits.
- Required courses: 10 credits, including:
(1) Seminar (1~4): 4 credits
(2) Urban Planning Practice: 3 credits
(3) 1 professional practice(/studio) course: 3 credits - Elective courses: 24 credits, should including at least 1 English taught professional course.
- The graduate students without urban planning bachelor degree are required to take the 2~4 basic courses (such as the core courses of our undergraduate program). The credits of the basic courses are not counted in the graduation credits.
In order to apply the oral examination of master degree thesis, the students must meet the following requirements.
- To publish at least 1 academic conference paper or journal paper which approved by the department.
- The proposal of master degree thesis has been reviewed and approved by the department for over 4 months.
- The draft of master degree thesis has been reviewed and approved by the department.
- Pass the English proficiency test, such as TOEFL iBT 69, CBT 193, IELTS 5.5 or TOEIC 750 and so on.
Additional Information
Students without an urban planning bachelor degree are required to take 2~4 basic courses from the following courses in urban planning undergraduate program:
- Urban Land Use Planning
- Introduction to Urban Planning
- Urban Transportation Planning
- Public Sector Economics
- Urban Design
- Urban Sociology
- Urban Economics
- Planning Analysis Method
- Urban Planning Codes
Students who are not graduated from the urban planning department, or who have not taken any “professional practice of urban planning” courses over 12 credits, are required to take “Theories and Practice of Urban Planning”.
During the school year, each student should take a “Seminar” course.

PH.D PROGRAM
Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Planning (Ph.D.)
Graduation Requirements
4~7 years required for graduation
Minimum 22 credits required for graduation, not including PhD degree dissertation 12 credits.
- Required courses “Seminar (1~4)”: 4 credits
- Elective courses: 18 credits
- The PhD students without urban planning bachelor or master degree are required to take 2 professional practical (/studio) courses of the urban planning master program. The credits of the professional practical courses are not counted in the graduation credits.
- Doctoral students who have completed relevant professional course credits in a doctoral program at a domestic or foreign university recognized by the Ministry of Education may apply for credit transfer following the NCKU credit transfer regulations. The number of credits transferred is limited to a maximum of half of the required credits specified in the preceding section.
In order to apply the oral examination for PhD degree dissertation, students must meet the following requirements.
- Pass the Ph.D. Candidate Qualifying Examination. The examination subjects include two basic subjects, “planning theory” and “planning methodology”, and one professional subject.
- Publish at least 1 academic article in SSCI journals; or 2 articles in SCI, SCIE, A&HCI, or TSSCI journals; or, for international students, 2 articles in international journals or 4 articles in international conference proceedings.
- Pass the English proficiency test, such as TOEFL iBT with the score 79 or above.

For Those Re-enrolled
Doctoral students in this department who have withdrawn from the program and later re-enrolled through the entrance examination must take the “SEMINAR ON PLANNING TOPICS” course each semester during their first and second years. All professional course credits earned during their previous enrollment in the doctoral program may be applied for credit transfer. If there are no changes to the dissertation research topic, any previously passed qualification exams or qualifying subjects within ten years before re-enrollment may also be transferred. Additionally, previously approved research proposals and the number of academic articles published may be combined for credit.
